Operator Theory: Advances and Applications 117

The present book is the first of the two volume proceedings of the Mark Krein International Conference on Operator Theory and Applications.

This conference, which was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the prominent mathematician Mark Krein, was held in Odessa, Ukraine, from August 18E2, 1997. The conference focused on the main ideas, methods, results, and achievements of M. G. Krein.

is devoted to the theory of differential operators and related topics. It opens with a description of the conference, biographical material and a number of survey papers about the work of M. G. Krein. The main
part of the book consists of original research papers presenting the state of the art in the area of differential operators.

This second volume is devoted to operator theory and related topics. It opens with the bibliography of M. G. Krein and a number of survey papers about his work. The main part of the book consists of original research
papers presenting the state of the art in operator theory and its applications.

Wissenschaft zwischen Qualitas und Quantitas

1998. Ca. 380 Seiten. Gebunden
ISBN 3-7643-5383-x

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control

Progress in Systems and Control Theory 26
2000. 488 pages. Hardcover
ISBN 3-7643-6297-9
During the past decade model predictive control (MPC), also referred to as receding horizon control or moving
horizon control, has become the preferred control strategy for quite a number of industrial processes.

There have been many significant advances in this area over the past years, one of the most important ones being its extension to nonlinear systems. This book gives an up-to-date assessment of the current state of
the art in the new field of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). The main topic areas that appear to be of central importance for NMPC are covered, namely receding horizon control theory, modeling for NMPC,
computational aspects of on-line optimization and application issues. The book consists of selected papers presented at the International Symposium on Nonlinear Model Predictive Control EAssessment and
Future Directions, which took place from June 3 to 5, 1998, in Ascona, Switzerland.

The book is geared towards researchers and practitioners in the area of control engineering and control theory. It is also suited for postgraduate students as the book contains several overview articles that give a
tutorial introduction into the various aspects of nonlinear model predictive control, including systems theory, computations, modeling and applications.

Recent Trends in Nonlinear Analysis
Festschrift Dedicated to Alfonso Vignoli on the Occasion of His Sixtieth Birthday

2000. 272 pages. Hardcover
ISBN 3-7643-6292-8

Progress in Nonlinear Differential Equations 40

The book contains a collection of 21 original research papers which report on recent developments in various fields of nonlinear analysis.

The collection covers a large variety of topics ranging from abstract fields such as algebraic topology, functional analysis, operator theory, spectral theory, analysis on manifolds, partial differential equations,
boundary value problems, geometry of Banach spaces, measure theory, variational calculus, and integral equations, to more application-oriented fields like control theory, numerical analysis, mathematical
physics, mathematical economy, and financial mathematics.

The book is addressed to all specialists interested in nonlinear functional analysis and its applications, but also to postgraduate students who want to get in touch with this important field of modern analysis. It is
dedicated to Alfonso Vignoli who has essentially contributed to the field, on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday.

Units in Skew Fields

Progress in Mathematics186

88 pages. Hardcover
ISBN 3-7643-6293-6

This book is devoted to a study of the unit groups of orders in skew fields, finite dimensional and central over the rational field; it thereby belongs to the field of noncommutative arithmetic.

Its purpose is a synopsis of results and methods, including full proofs of the most important results. It is addressed to researchers in number theory an

Einstein from 'B' to 'Z'

500 pages. Hardcover
ISBN 3-7643-4143-2
Due in May 2000

Einstein from 'BEto 'ZEis a unique collection of both published and unpublished papers on A. Einstein that
have been written by John Stachel, a physicist and historian of science of renown.

Stachel has written about Einstein's he man, his philosophy, and his work's or more than 40 years.

The articles included in this volume will present a coherent picture of the new view of Einstein which is emerging from recent detailed documentation and studies of ctivities and work during Einstein's
formative years about which so many old and new myths abound. Stachel's special introduction to the collection will explicitly tie together the themes implicit in the papers.

This work will be of particular interest to historians of 20th century science, students and practitioners of physics, and the apparently large section of the general reading public that continues to be fascinated
with Einstein. It will serve as an excellent reference text.

Key features:
comprehensive introduction tying together themes throughout the papers.
