Description

This work is a textbook on Mathematical Analysis written by expert lecturers in the field. This textbook, other than the classical differentiation and integration tools for functions of several real variables, metric spaces, ordinary differential equations, implicit function and so on, also provides opportunities to go deeper into certain topics: among them, the Ascoli-Arzela theorem, the regularity of convex functions in R^n, L^p spaces and absolutely continuous functions, all topics that are paramount in modern Mathematical Analysis. Other instances include the Weierstrass theorem on polynomial approximation of continuous functions or Peano's existence theorem (typically only existence, without uniqueness) for nonlinear ODEs and systems under general assumptions. The content is discussed in an elementary way and, at a successive stage, some topics are examined from several, more penetrating, angles. The agile organization of the subject matter helps instructors to effortlessly determine which parts to present during lectures and where to stop. The authors believe that any textbook can contribute to the success of a lecture course only to a point, and the choices made by lecturers are decisive in this respect. The book is addressed to graduate or undergraduate honors students in Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science, Statistics and Probability, attending Mathematical Analysis courses at the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Economics and Architecture.

Table of Contents

1 Sequences and Series of Functions.- 2 Metric Spaces and Banach Spaces.- 3 Functions of Several Variables.- 4 Ordinary Differential Equations.- 5 Linear Differential Equations.- 6 Curves and Integrals Along Curves.- 7 Differential One-Forms.- 8 Multiple Integrals.- 9 The Lebesgue Integral.- 10 Surfaces and Surface Integrals.- 11 Implicit Functions.- 12 Manifold in Rn and k-Forms.

Description

This CIME Series book provides mathematical and simulation tools to help resolve environmental hazard and security-related issues.

The contributions reflect five major topics identified by the SIES (Strategic Initiatives for the Environment and Security) as having significant societal impact: optimal control in waste management, in particular the degradation of organic waste by an aerobic biomass, by means of a mathematical model; recent developments in the mathematical analysis of subwave resonators; conservation laws in continuum mechanics, including an elaboration on the notion of weak solutions and issues related to entropy criteria; the applications of variational methods to 1-dimensional boundary value problems, in particular to light ray-tracing in ionospheric physics; and the mathematical modelling of potential electromagnetic co-seismic events associated to large earthquakes.

This material will provide a sound foundation for those who intend to approach similar problems from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Table of Contents

Introduction.- Optimal Control Strategies for Composting Processes in Biocells with L1 type and L2 type Cost Objectives.- Wave Interaction with Subwavelength Resonators.- Variational Methods With Application To One-Dimensional Boundary Value Problems And Numerical Evaluations.- Electromagnetic Hypogene Co-seismic Sources.- Conservation Laws in Continuum Mechanics.

Kontsevich's Deformation Quantization and Quantum Field Theory

Format: Paperback / softback, 270 pages, height x width: 235x155 mm, 1 Tables, color;

Series: Lecture Notes in Mathematics 2311
Pub. Date: 02-Aug-2022
ISBN-13: 9783031051210

Description

This book provides an introduction to deformation quantization and its relation to quantum field theory, with a focus on the constructions of Kontsevich and Cattaneo & Felder. This subject originated from an attempt to understand the mathematical structure when passing from a commutative classical algebra of observables to a non-commutative quantum algebra of observables. Developing deformation quantization as a semi-classical limit of the expectation value for a certain observable with respect to a special sigma model, the book carefully describes the relationship between the involved algebraic and field-theoretic methods. The connection to quantum field theory leads to the study of important new field theories and to insights in other parts of mathematics such as symplectic and Poisson geometry, and integrable systems.

Based on lectures given by the author at the University of Zurich, the book will be of interest to graduate students in mathematics or theoretical physics. Readers will be able to begin the first chapter after a basic course in Analysis, Linear Algebra and Topology, and references are provided for more advanced prerequisites.

Table of Contents

Introduction.- Foundations of Differential Geometry.- Symplectic Geometry.- Poisson Geometry.- Deformation Quantization.- Quantum Field Theoretic Approach to Deformation Quantization.
