Introductory Applied Statistics
With Resampling Methods & R

ISBN: 978-3-031-27740-5
Subject: Mathematics and Statistics
Published At: 2023年5月6日

About this book

This book offers an introduction to applied statistics through data analysis, integrating statistical computing methods. It covers robust and non-robust descriptive statistics used in each of four bivariate statistical models that are commonly used in research: ANOVA, proportions, regression, and logistic. The text teaches statistical inference principles using resampling methods (such as randomization and bootstrapping), covering methods for hypothesis testing and parameter estimation. These methods are applied to each statistical model introduced in preceding chapters.

Data analytic examples are used to teach statistical concepts throughout, and students are introduced to the R packages and functions required for basic data analysis in each of the four models. The text also includes introductory guidance to the fundamentals of data wrangling, as well as examples of write-ups so that students can learn how to communicate findings. Each chapter includes problems for practice or assessment. Supplemental instructional videos are also available as an additional aid to instructors, or as a general resource to students.

This book is intended for an introductory or basic statistics course with an applied focus, or an introductory analytics course, at the undergraduate level in a two-year or four-year institution. This can be used for students with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, from business, to the social sciences, to medicine. No sophisticated mathematical background is required.

Star-Critical Ramsey Numbers for Graphs

ISBN: 978-3-031-29980-3
Subject: Mathematics and Statistics
Planned Publication Date: 2023年6月3日
Series Title: SpringerBriefs in Mathematics

About this book

This text is a comprehensive survey of the literature surrounding star-critical Ramsey numbers. First defined by Jonelle Hook in her 2010 dissertation, these numbers aim to measure the sharpness of the corresponding Ramsey numbers by determining the minimum number of edges needed to be added to a critical graph for the Ramsey property to hold. Despite being in its infancy, the topic has gained significant attention among Ramsey theorists.

This work provides researchers and students with a resource for studying known results and their complete proofs. It covers typical results, including multicolor star-critical Ramsey numbers for complete graphs, trees, cycles, wheels, and n-good graphs, among others. The proofs are streamlined and, in some cases, simplified, with a few new results included. The book also explores the connection between star-critical Ramsey numbers and deleted edge numbers, which focus on destroying the Ramsey property by removing edges.

The book concludes with open problems and conjectures for researchers to consider, making it a valuable resource for those studying the field of star-critical Ramsey numbers

Field Arithmetic

Series Title: Ergebnisse der Mathematik und ihrer Grenzgebiete. 3. Folge / A Series of Modern Surveys in Mathematics

About this book

This book uses algebraic tools to study the elementary properties of classes of fields and related algorithmic problems. The first part covers foundational material on infinite Galois theory, profinite groups, algebraic function fields in one variable and plane curves. It provides complete and elementary proofs of the Chebotarev density theorem and the Riemann hypothesis for function fields, together with material on ultraproducts, decision procedures, the elementary theory of algebraically closed fields, undecidability and nonstandard model theory, including a nonstandard proof of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem. The focus then turns to the study of pseudo algebraically closed (PAC) fields, related structures and associated decidability and undecidability results. PAC fields (fields K with the property that every absolutely irreducible variety over K has a rational point) first arose in the elementary theory of finite fields and have deep connections with number theory.

This fourth edition substantially extends, updates and clarifies the previous editions of this celebrated book, and includes a new chapter on Hilbertian subfields of Galois extensions. Almost every chapter concludes with a set of exercises and bibliographical notes. An appendix presents a selection of open research problems.

Drawing from a wide literature at the interface of logic and arithmetic, this detailed and self-contained text can serve both as a textbook for graduate courses and as an invaluable reference for seasoned researchers.

Topology and Geometry of Intersections of Ellipsoids in R^n

ISBN: 978-3-031-28363-5
Subject: Mathematics and Statistics
Planned Publication Date: 2023年6月19日
Series Title: Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften

About this book

This book gives an overview of research in the topology and geometry of intersections of quadrics in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with a focus on intersections of concentric ellipsoids and related spaces. Unifying and organizing material previously spread over many articles, it also contains new results.

The first part provides very detailed foundations of a wide-ranging theory that could be useful for future developments. It includes chapters on general intersections of quadrics, operations on them, and intersections of concentric and coaxial quadrics. Moving from the general to the specific, the second part focuses on a topological description of transverse intersections of concentric ellipsoids, including a complete description of the case of three ellipsoids, and of some large families of more than three of them. The third part looks at relations to other areas of mathematics such as dynamical systems, complex geometry, contact and symplectic geometry, and other applications. An appendix gathers some technical items and also gives an account of the origins, motivations and progression of the subject, including historical recollections of the author, who has been central to its development.

Advances in Numerical Methods for Hyperbolic Balance Laws and Related Problems

ISBN: 978-3-031-29874-5
Subject: Mathematics and Statistics
Planned Publication Date: 2023年6月25日
Series Title: SEMA SIMAI Springer Series

About this book

A broad range of phenomena in science and technology can be described by non-linear partial differential equations characterized by systems of conservation laws with source terms. Well known examples are hyperbolic systems with source terms, kinetic equations, and convection-reaction-diffusion equations. This book collects research advances in numerical methods for hyperbolic balance laws and kinetic equations together with related modelling aspects. All the contributions are based on the talks of the speakers of the Young Researchers’ Conference “Numerical Aspects of Hyperbolic Balance Laws and Related Problems”, hosted at the University of Verona, Italy, in December 2021.
